Belgian athletes dominate the du!

Belgian Athletes dominated the male's race at this year´s Lanzarote International Duathlon at Club La Santa. Joerie Vansteelant finished first after 57:03 minutes and won the men's race with a comfortable distance of 54 seconds to Bart Aernouts, who started on the lead with Vansteelant but couldn't keep up on cycling and lost the later missing minute to the winner.

An even closer finish run had the ladies with last year's winner Yvonne VanVlerken only becoming second with 1:05:02 after the British Champion Julie Dibbens, who started easy and pedalled up to Van Vlerken, gaining 30 seconds and then running for victory in 1:04:51h.

Male´s 1st on the bike was the experienced Jurgen Dereere, who started out well with the run (15:22 min) but was soon overtaken by Vansteelant and followed Arnouts only 3 seconds behind in the changing zone for the last 2,5km.
4th finished the Spanish Victor Manuel del Corral Morales, who stayed with 58:55min under an hour, just shortly before Rob Woestenborghs from Belgium and another Spanish athlete, Miquel Capo Soler.

113 participants in total (95 men, 18 women) started this Saturday morning at 10am at the Stadium of Club La Santa. Professionals and private sportspeople lined up to compete in running and cycling, split up in 3 sessions of 5km running, 20k biking and 2,5km running.

The start was given by Marc Herremans, the wheelchair athlete who broken the Ironman Lanzarote course record in the wheelchair category and also did so in Hawaii where he became the Ironman World Champion in his category last October. Marc's fellow training triathletes Luc Van Lierde and Dirk Van Gossum, winner of Ironman Lanzarote 2000.

The weather conditions were almost perfect for the athletes, as they didn't have to fight too much against strong winds on their way down to the lagoon and the bike tour up to Soo, Tinajo and back through La Santa village to the sports resort. Indeed, the day before, the winds had been much stronger, being a matter of concern for most athletes.
Guests, tourists and family members cheered on the side for their friends and relatives, creating an amazing atmosphere for the athletes, staff and visitors. The last male runner returned to the Stadium after 1:57:29h and first time participant and Lanzarote local, Luisa Garcia Isla, finished in 2:00:55h with ovations and big applause.
